PRRD signs EE&C bill into law!

MALACANAN PALACE, Manila, 7 May 2019 – The Senate Committee on Energy, led by Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian, informed the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) earlier today that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved on 12 April 2019 Republic Act 11285, An Act Institutionalizing Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Enhancing the Efficient Use of Energy, and Granting Incentives to Energy Efficiency and Conservation Projects.

Otherwise known as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the bill was approved by the Bicameral Conference Committee of the 17th Congress on 16 January 2019, and was jointly transmitted by the 17th Congress to the Office of the President on 14 March 2019.

PE2 president Alexander Ablaza said, “This is a big moment for the country, if not the global community. The Philippines joins the league of nations which have chosen to pursue energy security and climate change mitigation aspirations through a mandatory policy framework and fiscal incentives for a mainstreamed economic activity called energy efficiency. The signing of R.A. 11285 marks the beginning of a new chapter for the local energy sector, which includes the proactive participation of its consumers on the demand-side of the market. While closing 29 years of legislative history, we in the Alliance should now tighten our collaborations with Government and business, to ensure that the ideals and targets envisioned by our policy makers are translated to real action, transformed behavior, mobilized capital and durable inter-sectoral partnerships.”
