PERPI taps PE2 expertise for EE session in ENERCON 2025

MUNTINLUPA CITY, 26 September 2025 – The Philippine Energy Research and Policy Institute (PERPI) invited Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) president Alexander Ablaza to be one of the resource presenters in the PERPI-organized energy efficiency session of UP Los Baños Department of Economics’ ENERCON 2025, a two-day conference held at the Vivere Hotel. PERPI needed PE2 to report on the current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the local energy efficiency market. PERPI believes that PE2’s insights are critical to advancing national energy efficiency goals.

Ablaza, through his presentation “Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization in the C&I Sector through the ESCO Business Model,” explained why energy efficiency, dubbed the “first fuel,” should be scaled up and deployed ahead of renewables. He said that energy service companies (ESCOs) in the country play a critical role in deploying energy efficiency improvements for technologies, which include chiller plant upgrades, space cooling, refrigeration, heating, ventilation, lighting, motor, drives, pumps, and compressors.

Held from 25-26 September, ENERCON 2025 was the fourth edition of the triennial conference aiming to sustain active networking and knowledge sharing among experts and practitioners involved in energy and environment research and policy. The conference series provides a venue for energy and environment sector stakeholders to share and gain insights related to the main components of the energy and environmental economics, along with related technologies, policy, and social change.

With this year’s theme, “Strengthening Economic Resilience through Sustainable Energy and Environmental Strategies,” local and international stakeholders presented in parallel sessions under the following thematic areas:

  • Economics of Energy Transition and Climate Change
  • Energy Transition, Institutional Pathways, and Structural Transformation
  • Energy and Environmental Institution
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Energy in Economic Development
  • Expanding Frontiers in Energy and Environmental Economics

PERPI was engaged by the UPLB Department of Economics to organize the session on energy efficiency. PERPI was established by virtue of Republic Act (R.A.) 11572. It is the Philippines' premier independent think tank on energy policy and sustainability.
