PE2 holds Energy Efficiency Day 2024 with an Inaugural Pledge to Energy Efficiency

(PE2 Note: PE2 gathered an even bigger EE Day in March 2024, this time with an EE pledge ceremony led by Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.)

SMX Manila – The Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance (PE2) held its 4th Energy Efficiency Day 2024 Conference on Wednesday, 20 March in F3 Hall, SMX Manila. With this year’s theme tapping on the “Global Call to Double Energy Efficiency on the Road to 2030.” 

Energy Efficiency Day 2024 is the fourth edition of PE2’s annual event to engage a whole-of-society response toward mainstreaming energy efficiency as the economy’s first fuel. It also marks the fifth anniversary of the passage of Republic Act 11285, better known as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) Act.

PE2 President Alexander Ablaza welcomed the guests and participants with an update on the COP28 concensus to double energy efficiency progress, followed by Informa Markets’ Country General Manager Rungphech Rose Chitanuwat emphasizing energy efficiency as a strategic sector in PhilEnergy.

DOE Sec. Raphael P.M. Lotilla was represented by Usec. Felix William “Wimpy” Fuentabella who shared how an economy-wide approach to growing energy efficiency impacts, while Amb. Laure Beaufils of the British Embassy Manila talked about energy efficiency in the context of the PH-UK Climate Partnership.

Amb. Franz-Michael Mellbin of the Royal Danish Embassy Manila expounded on deploying Danish energy efficiency solutions to the PH market, along with the Embassy of Sweden’s Deputy Head of Mission Danilo Dovgoborets who delivered Amb. Annika Thunborg’s speech on energy efficiency in the PH-SW Green Transition Partnership.

Ireen Go-Catane, Country President of Schneider Electric Philippines and PE2 Treasurer delivered her talk on the fastest path to net zero.

Atty. Marjorie Ramos –Samaniego, Board of Investments (BOI) Governor gave insights on incentivising energy efficiency under the Strategic Investment Priority Plan while Patrick Henry C. Go, Executive Director of J.G. Summit Holdings Inc also shared how they are incorporating energy efficiency in JGHSHI’s Action and Transition Roadmap.

A very interesting exchange of  expertise and ideas on how can the market respond to the global call to double energy efficiency progress was discussed by  panellists, David J. Morgado of Asian Development Bank (ADB), Dominic Michael Alvarez of Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning Company (CCAC), Wesley Andre Chu of Daikin Airconditioning Philippines, Jedrick de Jesus of OSP-ESCO International and Raghuraman Chandrasekhar of Signify Philippines.

Lastly, representing Sec. Robert E.A. Borje of the  Climate Change Commission (CCC), Executive Director Raul Villegas gave an outline of the Energy Efficiency in the National Climate Change Action Plan.

And the real highlight of the event was the ecstatic participants’ partaking in the Energy Efficiency Pledge as led by Olympic gold medalist Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo OLY, who is also an energy efficiency  and sustainability advocate. The EE Pledge of commitment was recited by policymakers, VIPs, CEOs, Industry Leaders, energy stakeholders and  representatives from the public and private sector as they pledged to learn how to use energy more efficiently, to take steps to reduce energy consumption in their homes, place of work and everywhere they are able to make a difference and to use only energy-efficient products, solutions and technologies as their response to the global call for net-zero carbon emissions. They commit to teach their families, friends, colleagues at work and the younger generation energy efficiency and conservation practices towards a net-zero lifestyle transition and help contribute to the Philippines’ energy security and climate change mitigation goals as they firmly believe that energy efficiency should be prioritized as the economy’s First Fuel.

Ruth Yu-Owen, PE2 Vice President for Internal Affairs was the master of ceremonies while PE2 Vice President for External Affairs Theresa Acedillo-Lapuz introduced the speakers and moderated the panel discussion.

The Energy Efficiency Day 2024 Conference was held in conjunction with PhilEnergy, the most attended energy trade event in the country,
